How are the FTSE 100 brands doing on mobile?

Mobile devices are everywhere. According to a report in June 2013 by Deloitte, the percentage of smartphone owners in the UK has reached 72%. But are UK businesses and brands taking advantage of this widening opportunity? Several months ago, The Search Agency US published a report analyzing the mobile experiences of the Fortune 100. The Search Agency UK has replicated that study by testing the mobile sites of the FTSE 100, the companies with the highest market capitalization on the London Stock Exchange.

Using the methodology from the previous report, The Search Agency UK analyzed the FTSE 100 sites based on a set of criteria across five categories to determine which corporations were most closely aligned with established mobile marketing best practices. The analysis was based on both quantitative factors established by industry best practices and qualitative factors determined by our team of experts. Here are some of the main findings:

  • Although Google officially recommends that websites use Responsive Web Design (RWD), only 2 of the FTSE 100 companies use RWD.
  • 43%of the Fortune 100 Companies link to their social media sites.
  • 99% of the FTSE 100 companies’ sites took longer than the 1 second to load (the Google recommended time for loading mobile sites).
