Are Restaurant and Catering Websites Optimized for Mobile?

Exploring Mobile User Experience and SEO for Restaurants and Catering Brands

With fall and winter quickly approaching, the seasons to curl up at home with some fresh takeout are upon us. However, are restaurant and catering companies prepared when it comes to mobile?

We put the top restaurant and catering brands to the test by evaluating and scoring their websites when served on mobile devices in our latest edition of the Mobile Experience Scorecard report. Using data from Experian Hitwise, we extracted the 50 top visited restaurant and catering websites, ranked by number of monthly visits each received on mobile devices in August of 2014, and scored them against our User Experience Scorecard, as well as our new SEO Ranking Scorecard. Our findings show that brands continue to struggle with optimizing their websites for mobile.

  • While an impressive 32% of the restaurant and catering websites were formatted with Responsive Web Design (RWD), not a single one of these RWD optimized sites were able to pass our page speed test.
  • 96% of the reviewed websites exhibited an automatic or manual geolocation API, while only 40% had a click-to-order or click-to-reserve button.
  • 87% were missing meta descriptions, and 64% showed click depth warnings.
