Yahoo! sues Facebook for infringement- Yahoo! has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the social media giant Facebook. The lawsuit was filed in San Jose on Monday and includes more than 10 patents. According to a statement released by Yahoo!, “Yahoo! has invested substantial resources in research and development through the years, which has resulted in numerous patented inventions of technology that other companies have licensed. Unfortunately, the matter with Facebook remains unresolved, and we are compelled to seek redress in federal court.”
Google launches GetMo in the UK- Google has launched a new suite of services in the UK called GetMo, aimed at encouraging UK businesses to spend more time on their mobile marketing strategies. GetMo is an extension of the US mobile marketing scheme GoMo. “As the smartphone explosion continues, more consumers are looking to engage with brands by searching for them on their mobile phone. Yet the majority of businesses don’t have mobile sites or a mobile strategy for connecting with them,” explains Ian Carrington, Google’s director of mobile advertising for Europe. “Businesses need to get mobile in order to provide a positive user experience for their customers. At the moment, business are not keeping up with consumers.”
The End of Encyclopedia Britannica- The 244-year-old encyclopedia publisher, Encyclopedia Britannica, announced on Tuesday that it would stop printing its iconic reference works. The company has seen a dramatic decrease in book sales over the last 20 years thanks to the advent of Google and Wikipedia. The publisher said it is now a digital company and will focus on selling reference to digital subscribers on smartphone and tablet devices.
Google acquires Milk- Google has acquired the product team behind the start-up Milk, created by Digg co-founder Kevin Rose. Rumor has it that Google paid around $15 million for the team. Here’s the official statement from Milk:
We started Milk Inc. (the company behind Oink) to rapidly build and test out new ideas. Oink was our first test and, in preparing to move onto the next project, we’ve decided to shut it down to help focus our efforts.

Google “introduces” semantic search- The Wall Street Journal published an article on Thursday entitled “With Semantic Search, Google Eyes Competitors”, which suggests that we should expect major changes to Google Search over the next couple of months, including improved semantic search technology that will yield better, more relevant search results. In response to the WSJ article, Danny Sullivan maintains this isn’t new news in his article “WSJ Says Big Google Search Changes Coming? Reality Check Time!” on Search Engine Land. Sullivan’s article details Google’s current semantic search technology, the competitions between Bing, Apple, and Wolfram Alpha for mobile and desktop semantic search, and what we as users should expect from semantic search.
Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL online ad partnership launches- Microsoft’s online advertising deal with Yahoo! and AOL, which was originally launched in November 2011, is now live. The three have partnered together to take on Google in display advertising.
Twitter acquires Posterous- Twitter announced the acquisition of Posterous, a micro-blogging service. The details of the acquisition have not been disclosed.
